Miraleste

Miraleste is the hillside district on the harbor side of the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Rancho Palos Verdes, along Miraleste Drive and Palos Verdes Drive East. It began as one of the four districts of the Palos Verdes Project, the planned community laid out with the Olmsted Brothers, and its first tracts were recorded in 1924. Later streets filled in through the 1950s and 1960s.

The neighborhood

Living in Miraleste

The project's 1920s sales brochures, kept by the Palos Verdes Library District, describe the Miraleste District as overlooking the Los Angeles Harbor, and the original plan called for a small business center here. Miraleste Drive was once the southern end of Western Avenue. When Palos Verdes Estates became a city in 1939, Miraleste was left out because it did not adjoin the rest of the project, but the Palos Verdes Homes Association kept its Protective Restrictions here. The Association still counts Miraleste owners among its members, and the city has advised that homes on certain Miraleste streets must also follow its Art Jury rules for exterior changes.

The canyons behind many homes belong to the Miraleste Recreation and Parks District, an independent district formed in 1940 when the Homes Association deeded it 60 acres. It keeps pocket parks such as Frog Pond, Harter, Miltenberger, Miraleste and Canada parks, along with hiking-only canyon trails including the Siena Loop and Colinita trails. Miraleste Hills, on Crownview and Knoll View drives, and the Daladier Drive area to the south were laid out from the mid-1950s through the 1960s. Miraleste Plaza, at Palos Verdes Drive East and Miraleste Drive, has shop buildings from 1956 to 1972, and the Miraleste Library was completed in 1970. Miraleste has about 800 homes.
