The Courtyard, the Avenue, the Promenade
Five names since 1981
It opened in the fall of 1981 as The Courtyard, an enclosed mall built by developers Ernest Hahn and Ron Florance. It became The Shops at Palos Verdes in 1988 and The Avenue of the Peninsula in 1998. A $78 million renovation in 1999 took the roof off. It was renamed The Promenade on the Peninsula in 2008 and is now signed Promenade | PV.
The department stores are long gone: Bullocks Wilshire, May Co. (later Robinsons-May) and Saks Fifth Avenue, which closed on May 13, 2006.
Things to do
Today the draw is things to do: bowling at Level Up Bowl & Bistro, movies at Regal Promenade, indoor golf at Golf Theory, the ZenesisX Gaming Lounge, Kiddleton's claw machines and Urban Youth Park's parkour gym. LA Kings Ice runs the rink, and The Sports Complex and The Lab Basketball Academy fill out the sports side. The center's directory lists Mega Looma Epic Adventure Park as coming soon.
The bigger story is housing around Peninsula Center and what happens to large commercial sites like this one. Our Peninsula Center briefing follows it.
