Monaco

Monaco is the neighborhood of French-named streets, among them Cartier, Marne, Rhone, Matisse and Chartres, near Crest Road and Hawthorne Boulevard. It began as Palos Verdes Monaco, a subdivision opened in the early 1960s with sales through Link, Metzger & Company. Homes in the first section went up from 1961, and a second section was built mostly in the 1970s and 1980s.

The neighborhood

Living in Monaco

In 1963 the developers made Monaco House, a $160,000 showplace in the subdivision, available to civic and charitable groups, and that September an advertisement reported that nine new families had moved in the week before. The Palos Verdes Monaco sales office on Crest Road, a block from Hawthorne, was still open in 1971.

The Monaco HOA takes part in the city's neighborhood beautification grants, and the city's Neighborhood Watch map calls the area Cartier. Robert E. Ryan Community Park, the city's first park, taken over from the county when Rancho Palos Verdes incorporated in 1973, sits beside the original section.
