Los Verdes

Los Verdes is the hillside neighborhood around the county's Los Verdes Golf Course, west of Hawthorne Boulevard near Crest Road. Its core is Monte Verde, a subdivision of custom-home lots that Palos Verdes Properties, a partnership of the Rancho Palos Verdes Corporation and the Capital Company, previewed in October 1962. Most homes went up between the early 1960s and the mid-1970s.

The neighborhood

Living in Los Verdes

The first ads offered improved view lots averaging about 15,000 square feet, priced from $15,000, with all utilities underground and architectural controls on what could be built. In 1963 the Palos Verdes Community Arts Association commended the development's entry marker, landscaping and natural-contour site plan, and lots bordering the golf course went on sale that September. When 67 more lots opened on March 3, 1965, 18 sold the first day.

The golf course opened to the public on November 13, 1964, and by 1969 was nicknamed 'The Pebble Beach of the Peninsula.' Later additions include the Alta Vista homes, marketed around 1979–80, and apartment complexes on Los Verdes Drive. The city's Neighborhood Watch map calls the area Los Verdes, and real estate agents list it as Country Club, MLS area 171. Their MLS area 173, also called Los Verdes, is a different area to the north that takes in Vista Grande.
