Living in The Ranch
The city annexed the Ranch area between 1960 and 1966. Its General Plan describes The Ranch as one of several private neighborhoods that only residents and their guests can enter, with limited access to the arterial roads. Bridle trails run throughout, though most houses have no secondary buildings, which the plan reads as a sign that fewer residents keep horses here than in Dapplegray Lanes.
The Ranch HOA is on the city's 2021–2029 Housing Element list of homeowners associations. In 1992 the city set guidelines for one day replacing Northrop's aerospace research site next door on Crest Road with homes, and one of them was that ocean views from the adjacent Ranch properties be kept.
