Valmonte
Valmonte is the eastern zone of Palos Verdes Estates, along Palos Verdes Drive North and Via Valmonte where the city meets Torrance. Its main tracts were recorded in 1923 and 1924, and the Palos Verdes Project, planned by the Olmsted Brothers, advertised it as inland high ground overlooking the metropolitan area, the mountains and the sea. It has about 1,210 homes.

Living in Valmonte
Its landmark is the Mirlo Gate Lodge Tower on Via Valmonte, a stone tower at the city's east entrance designed by Clarence E. Howard, the project's chief architect. The National Register nomination dates it to 1925, while the plaque on the site says 1926. It was built as a gatehouse with rooms for a gatekeeper, but only ever housed city employees, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2019.
Howard also designed the Palos Verdes Riding Academy, founded in 1925 and still in use as the Palos Verdes Stables on Via Opata. He also designed the clubhouse of the Palos Verdes Golf Club, whose course beside Valmonte opened November 15, 1924. Around 1925 the Pasadena firm Marston, Van Pelt & Maybury drew a Valmonte Plaza with a clock tower, but it was never built. Via Valmonte was once Hawthorne Avenue, and Palos Verdes Drive North was first called Granvia Valmonte. The library district's photo archive files 1920s houses at the drive's west end under Malaga Cove, though the city's zone map now places them in Valmonte.
