Malaga Cove
Malaga Cove, one of the four zones on the city's map of Palos Verdes Estates, runs from lower Malaga Cove by the ocean up the hillside along Via Del Monte. Its first tract was recorded on October 23, 1923, as the Palos Verdes Project, planned by the Olmsted Brothers with Charles H. Cheney, got under way. Today it holds about 1,190 homes.

Living in Malaga Cove
Malaga Cove Plaza, designed by Webber, Staunton and Spaulding, is its center, and the only one of the four shopping centers in the planners' original scheme that was carried out. Its first building, the Gardner Building, dates to 1925, and the plaza was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021. The marble Neptune fountain, a two-thirds-size copy of the 1563 fountain in Bologna, dates to 1930, though a 2025 magazine account calls it a 1934 gift. Community donations of about $75,000 paid for its restoration in 2025.
Behind the plaza, Myron Hunt's Malaga Cove Library was built in 1929, with grounds by the Olmsted Brothers, and joined the National Register in 1995. Beside it is Farnham Martin Park, laid out in 1928 and named for the project's superintendent of parks. Up the hill, La Venta Inn was built in 1923 as the project's sales office and the city's first building. One local real-estate office calls the slopes above Palos Verdes Drive Upper Malaga Cove, or Montemar. Like the rest of the city, Malaga Cove is under the Palos Verdes Homes Association, whose Art Jury must approve any new building or exterior change.
