Lunada Bay
Lunada Bay is the southern district of Palos Verdes Estates, reaching along the coast from Bluff Cove past the bay itself to the Rancho Palos Verdes line. It was one of the four original districts of Frank A. Vanderlip's Palos Verdes Project, laid out by the Olmsted Brothers, and its largest tracts were recorded in 1924.

Living in Lunada Bay
The early plans were grand. The Project meant Lunada Bay Plaza to be the largest of its business districts, with a theater, a post office, a community building and stores, and a sales booklet from about 1926 pictured a yacht club and harbor, a swimming cove and an English-style town site called Margate Plaza. A nursery opened at Lunada Bay in 1923 to grow trees and shrubs for the new community, and in 1927 Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. drew up a "pleasure basin" for bathing and boating in the bay. Neither the harbor nor the pool was built. Los Angeles County turned down a 1938 offer to take the bayfront as a park in place of back taxes, and the city's incorporation in December 1939 kept it as parkland. A 1959 marina plan ended when residents voted 78 to 76 against it in a postcard survey the City Council requested, and in 1969 the city made Lunada Bay part of its Shoreline Preserve.
Most of the district's homes, about 2,390 in all, went up after World War II. Many longtime residents still call the northern end Margate, after the seaside town in Kent, England. The name survives in Margate Road, Margate Square and the Margate Parkway open space, and English street names such as Chelsea, Addison, Dalton and Cloyden run through that end. Lunada Bay Plaza, at Palos Verdes Drive West and Yarmouth Road, is still the neighborhood's hub for summer concerts and festivals, and the Snelgrove Memorial Fountain stands in the median nearby. The volunteer Lunada Bay Homeowners Association holds events in Lunada Bay Park. Working with the city and the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy, it also replanted about two acres of oceanfront parkland with native plants and walking paths. As everywhere in Palos Verdes Estates, the Palos Verdes Homes Association and its Art Jury review changes to homes under deed restrictions recorded in 1923.
