Southfield & Flying Triangle
Southfield and the Flying Triangle are the southern slopes of gated Rolling Hills, below Crest Road and facing Portuguese Bend. About 55 homes sit on Southfield Drive, Flying Mane Road and the Ringbit and Packsaddle roads. The Palos Verdes Corporation announced the 150-acre Flying Triangle on October 1, 1938, as the first addition to the original Rolling Hills, naming it for an old Bixby ranch brand.

Living in Southfield & Flying Triangle
Fire and moving ground have shaped the area. On June 22, 1973, a brush fire that began in Rancho Palos Verdes spread into the Flying Triangle and Southfield areas and destroyed 10 homes and 5 barns, and the City Council declared a local emergency three days later. In March 1980 an ancient landslide of about 70 acres in the Flying Triangle was seen moving. The city's hazard plan says it may have started as early as 1974, while the Los Angeles Times dates it to 1979.
Since 1980 the city has allowed little more than repairs in the Flying Triangle, and the Rolling Hills Community Association spent $300,000 on road repairs after the slide. Southfield Drive, one of the city's five main collector roads, leaves Crest Road inside the gates.
