Portuguese Bend Road
Portuguese Bend Road climbs from the Main Gate at Palos Verdes Drive North to Crest Road in gated Rolling Hills. About 110 homes sit on it and its side lanes, among them Williamsburg Lane, Poppy Trail, Wagon Lane and Acacia Road. A.E. Hanson recalled that his first road ran from the gatehouse here up to Crest Road, with the first parcels, sold from 1936, on either side.

Living in Portuguese Bend Road
Hanson's Palos Verdes Corporation finished the first gatehouse, at the corner of Portuguese Bend Road and Palos Verdes Drive, in June 1935 for $1,500. The deed restrictions that created Rolling Hills were recorded on May 14, 1936. Across the road, the corporation's 1938 administration building gave way in 1967 to Rolling Hills City Hall, which now sits beside the Community Association office just outside the Main Gate.
Around 1939 Hanson had architect Paul R. Williams design 14 small Williamsburg-style homes, each on about an acre, along Williamsburg Lane, a curving ridge-top lane west of Acacia Road. Hanson planted it with olive trees and edged it with a white picket fence. Williams had already designed the community's first town hall, post office and store, on the northwest corner of Portuguese Bend Road and Palos Verdes Drive North. Nearby, the Caballeros Ring at Hesse's Gap, by Poppy Trail, is one of the community's two riding rings, with hitching posts and a picnic area.
